Could You Help Us As a Trustee?

Signpost International is recruiting new Trustees. We are seeking people who share our vision of an equitable world where poverty and injustice are eliminated, and who can bring strong governance, insight and challenge to help us deliver our mission. Established in 1992 Signpost International became a Scottish Charitable Incorporated Organisation (SCIO) in 2021.

As a Dundee-based community development organisation, we support people globally (including in Scotland) to be the drivers of their own change and so work toward realising our vision of “An equitable world where poverty and injustice are eliminated, people thrive, & communities flourish”. From supporting rural communities in East Africa to access safe water to tackling food insecurity here in Scotland we keep people at the centre of all that we do, aiming for long-term change rather than quick-fix solutions. We are at an exciting point as we seek to significantly expand programmes locally while growing the capacity of our partners overseas towards a truly sustainable future.

What Trustees Do?

As a Trustee you will help set Signpost International’s strategic direction, ensure good governance and compliance as a Scottish Charitable Incorporated Organisation, oversee financial sustainability and risk, and support the Chief Executive while respecting the boundary between governance and day-to-day management.

  • Contribute to Board discussions and decisions, bringing independent judgement and constructive challenge.
  • Help shape and monitor strategic priorities, outcomes and organisational performance.
  • Provide oversight of budgets, management accounts, annual reporting and financial controls.
  • Support effective risk management, safeguarding, and strong policies and processes.
  • Act as an ambassador for Signpost International and our values.

We are particularly interested in candidates with experience in:

  • Business & commercial – organisational growth, partnerships, operations, HR, or change management.
  • Finance – budgeting, forecasting, financial controls, audit, charity finance, or risk management (including Treasurer-ready experience).
  • Programmescommunity development, programme design and delivery, monitoring and evaluation, safeguarding, or impact measurement.
  • Strategy – strategic planning, performance frameworks, governance-level KPIs, or organisational development.
  • Governance – charity regulation/compliance, board effectiveness, policies, or committee leadership.

Prior trustee experience is welcome but not essential. We value people who are curious, collaborative, willing to learn, and committed to our values and mission. We particularly welcome applications from under-represented groups to help ensure our Board reflects the communities we serve.

Time commitment

The Board meets four times per year. Trustees are also expected to join at least one subcommittee (e.g., Finance & Audit, Programmes, Fundraising, HR, Safeguarding) and to prepare for meetings by reading papers in advance. Reasonable additional time may be required for occasional ad-hoc meetings.

Support and induction

Trustee roles are voluntary and unpaid. New Trustees receive an induction and access to our Trustees Handbook, constitution and key policies, plus support from the Chair, Chief Executive and fellow Trustees.

Who we’re looking for?

You’ll be committed to Signpost International’s vision, mission and values; able to work as part of a team; and prepared to act in the best interests of the charity, including declaring and managing any conflicts of interest.
